Bloomsbury to receive multimillion-pound payout in Anthropic copyright deal

Bloomsbury says it has 14,087 titles covered by the settlement, with about $3,000 proposed per title, after fees leaving an expected roughly $19 million share.

Bloomsbury, the publisher behind the Harry Potter franchise, says it will receive a multimillion-pound payout as a beneficiary of a $1.5 billion copyright settlement between the AI startup Anthropic and thousands of authors over the use of protected works to power chatbots, according to Guardian Business.

The company said 14,087 titles are listed within the settlement, with proposed compensation of about $3,000 per title. Bloomsbury expects to receive the cash in installments, potentially starting in the second half of its fiscal year, and it will split proceeds with authors after deductions.

After about a 10% deduction for attorney fees and other expenses, Bloomsbury and the affected authors’ group can expect to receive about $19 million, the report said.

The underlying lawsuit was filed in 2024 by novelist Andrea Bartz and two other authors, and US district judge Araceli Martínez-Olguín said the settlement provides “meaningful relief.” Guardian Business added that the case is the first major settlement among dozens of AI copyright lawsuits underway in the US.
