Bristol Airport seeks to grow passenger cap to 15 million
The airport is also asking to add 15,000 flights a year, even as campaigners say most of its emissions come from aircraft rather than airport operations.
Bristol Airport is seeking approval to expand, applying to raise its annual passenger cap from 12 million to 15 million as it pursues changes aimed at cutting emissions, according to BBC Business.
The airport plans additional infrastructure tied to higher traffic, including a bigger terminal building and new landing lights on nearby common land, while EasyJet is among the airlines adding capacity with newer fuel efficient aircraft.
Airport chief executive Dave Lees said Bristol would be the first airport to be net zero by 2030, with measures such as electric vehicles, solar power and 22 industrial scale heat pumps, but BBC Business reports the airport’s target does not include emissions from flights.
Climate campaigners have argued the approach is insufficient because the vast majority of the airport’s carbon footprint is linked to aircraft, urging local council leaders to reject the expansion, and BBC Business reports that councillors are currently reviewing the plan.
