House subcommittee seeks briefings on Compass and MRED private listing deal

The House Judiciary subcommittee wants Compass and MRED to explain their use of private listing networks by Aug. 5, citing potential impacts on transparency, competition, and consumer outcomes.

A House Judiciary subcommittee has asked Compass International Holdings and Midwest Real Estate Data, or MRED, for briefings on their private listing network partnership, citing concerns about transparency, competition, and consumer outcomes.

According to HousingWire, the Subcommittee on the Administrative State, Regulatory Reform and Antitrust sent separate letters on July 22, 2026, to Compass CEO Robert Reffkin and MRED President and CEO Rebecca Jensen, requesting staff briefings by 10 a.m. Eastern on Aug. 5.

The letters, signed by subcommittee chair Rep. Scott Fitzgerald, R-Wis., say the panel is examining whether real estate companies are using private listing networks and similar structures to insulate themselves from competition at the expense of consumers, undercutting U.S. antitrust goals.

HousingWire reports that MRED in April announced a deal with Compass to expand its Private Listing Network nationwide by opening participation to agents outside MRED’s traditional Midwest footprint, with MRED providing off-MLS listings while Compass markets them first through its own agent network before they appear on major public platforms.
