MGA leaders face a talent gap as experienced staff near retirement

In the U.S., premium flowing through MGAs exceeds $100 billion annually, while 67% of the MGA workforce is age 44 or older, according to Vertafore research discussed by an insurance software executive.

As thousands of experienced professionals in the managing general agent, or MGA, workforce approach retirement, insurance leaders are being urged to treat succession planning as a business strategy, not just a human resources issue, according to Coverager.

Emily McGinn, SVP and General Manager of Vertafore’s MGA & Wholesale business, said MGAs are consolidating as larger players buy smaller firms and as M and A activity continues, supported by private equity and acquisitions. She also noted that MGA premium in the U.S. now exceeds $100 billion annually, representing roughly 9 to 10% of the property and casualty market.

McGinn said growth is becoming more measured, with M and A activity staying strong through 2026 even as buyers become more selective and emphasize operational excellence and long-term value creation. She added that while companies can scale with technology, people remain central to underwriting judgment and carrier relationships.

Vertafore’s MGA Workforce and Technology Report highlighted the demographic shift, finding 67% of the MGA workforce is age 44 or older and only 4% is under 28, translating to about six professionals over 55 for every one worker under 25. McGinn said many MGAs do not always have structured training programs, so leaders should review internal processes to prepare the next generation.
