NYC Economic Development Corp names Anthony Shorris CEO, Lina Khan chair
The appointments come as the NYCEDC seeks to reshape its mission around affordability and poverty reduction, and continue work tied to 200,000 planned housing units over the next decade.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced the leadership team for the city Economic Development Corp., naming Anthony Shorris as president and CEO and Lina Khan as chair. Mamdani said the agency should pair economic development with economic justice as the city confronts its affordability crisis. Shorris previously served as first deputy mayor under Bill de Blasio and held budget roles under Ed Koch, and he most recently worked as a partner at McKinsey & Co. The Economic Development Corp is a quasi-governmental nonprofit that directs projects and funding intended to boost the city economy, including programs such as LifeSci NYC, which has sought to accelerate life sciences development. The NYCEDC also selects developers for projects on city-owned land, a key part of Mamdani’s goal to develop 200,000 new housing units over the next decade. Just this week, the agency released a request for proposals offering a city-owned lot in Harlem to developers at no cost if they build a 140-unit, mixed-income development. The delay in naming the leadership, according to the mayor’s office, followed discussions with Deputy Mayor for Economic Justice Julie Su about reorienting the NYCEDC toward policies aimed at reducing poverty rather than focusing only on adding jobs and investment.
