China moves AI companions under tight supervision
The new rules, effective July 15, restrict AI-human interactions from encouraging harm, discouraging secret sharing, and requiring different modes for adults and minors.
The South China Morning Post reports that China has placed artificial intelligence companions under tighter supervision as of July 15, following a growing boom in automated companion products.
Under the rules described by SCMP, AI-human interactions must not encourage violence or harm users physical and psychological well-being, and AI bots should not lure users into sharing secrets or push them toward dependence that damages real-world relationships.
The regulations also specifically address children, saying AI should not provide virtual relatives or partners, and that different modes are required for adults and minors.
