ECB unveils shortlisted designs for next euro banknotes and launches survey
The ECB said the public survey will run until September 21, 2026, and a final design decision is expected by year end.
The European Central Bank has unveiled the shortlisted design proposals for the next series of euro banknotes and opened a public online survey to gather feedback across Europe. The proposals are organized around two themes, “European culture” and “Rivers and birds,” with matching motifs developed for each.
ECB President Christine Lagarde said the redesign is intended to reinforce a shared European identity, describing euro banknotes as more than a payment tool. The ECB said the submissions were produced through an EU-wide design contest that drew more than 1,200 applications from graphic designers, with 25 invited to create proposals for one or both themes.
An independent jury of 21 experts selected the ten shortlisted proposals, and the ECB’s Governing Council decided to run the survey using those entries. The public feedback phase is paired with a separate survey conducted by an independent research company using a representative sample of euro area citizens.
The ECB said it will publish a report on the survey results after the final design concept is selected, with the Governing Council expected to make the final decision around the end of the year. The selected design will undergo further development and testing before production, and the ECB expects the new banknotes to enter circulation in subsequent years, with previous series notes remaining valid.
