India plans to build five small modular nuclear reactors by 2033
India said its installed nuclear power capacity target would rise to about 22 GW by 2031-32, supported by SMR development at Bhabha Atomic Research Centre.
India expects to build domestically five small modular reactors by 2033 as part of a broader effort to accelerate nuclear power installations over the next two decades, Atomic Energy Minister Jitendra Singh said in a written reply to lawmakers.
Singh said the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, under India’s Department of Atomic Energy, is developing multiple SMR projects including a 220-MW Bharat Small Modular Reactor, a 55-MW reactor, and a high-temperature gas-cooled reactor designed to produce hydrogen.
India’s nuclear energy roadmap aims to increase installed nuclear power capacity from 8.78 gigawatts currently to about 22 GW by the 2031-32 fiscal year, with a longer-term goal of reaching 100 GW by 2047.
The plan would require cumulative capital of up to 19.28 trillion Indian rupees, or about $200 billion at current exchange rates, according to a power ministry panel’s ‘roadmap to 100 GW’ report, while India’s government approved an Atomic Energy Bill by the end of 2025 to allow private investment in nuclear energy for the first time.
