Beijing official urges Hong Kong lawmakers to expand support for leader

The call came as Xia Baolong met 88 legislators in Beijing and urged Legco to help strengthen governance and address residents’ concerns.

Xia Baolong, Beijing’s point man on Hong Kong affairs, urged the city’s lawmakers to do more in supporting the chief executive and improving governance, according to a Legco press statement cited by SCMP Economy.

SCMP Economy reports Xia met 88 legislators in Beijing during a national affairs study tour, and told members to step up learning, strengthen unity and carry out their duties with diligence.

He further pressed Legco to play a greater role in administering Hong Kong in accordance with the law, aiming to enhance governance efficacy, inject impetus into the city’s growth, and tackle residents’ most pressing concerns.

SCMP Economy adds that Xia’s deputies, Xu Qifang, Zhou Ji, Zhang Dongmei, and Nong Rong, attended the seminar, with Zhou also serving as director of the central government’s liaison office in Hong Kong.
