ERGO and Google Cloud study self-evolving AI agents for insurers
The report says Germanys insurance workforce is set to retire faster, with one quarter of industry employees in the baby boomer generation.
A new report from ERGO, developed in collaboration with Google Cloud, examines how self-evolving AI agents could help insurers capture, preserve, and scale undocumented institutional knowledge, often referred to as “tribal knowledge.” Reinsurance News reports the focus is on knowledge that remains embedded in everyday routines, situational decisions, and staff experience rather than being formally documented or systematically accessible.
The study warns that the risk of losing long term expertise is rising as many insurance professionals approach retirement. It cites data from the German Insurance Association that one quarter of Germanys insurance industry employees belong to the baby boomer generation, and that a significant share is expected to retire over the next five years.
According to the report, “self-evolving” or “self-improving” agents are adaptive AI systems that can review their own strategies and workflows, and in some cases even their own architecture, as they improve over time. The paper also describes a concrete implementation example using an “AI content engine,” and outlines potential future deployments across insurers value chains.
ERGO Innovation Lab Innovation Developer Emilia Dang said the next stage for agentic AI is not only more automation, but also how companies preserve and harness knowledge amid demographic change and a shortage of skilled workers. She added that without a sustainable approach, organizations risk losing decision making criteria, contextual knowledge, and practical experience, and that the value of these agents is intended to extend into experience, context, and judgment.
