India orders GitHub to take down bitcoin-linked app Bitchat
The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre said it identified three GitHub repositories tied to Bitchat and gave the platform a three-hour deadline to disable access.
CoinDesk reports that India’s cybercrime agency ordered GitHub to take down repositories linked to Bitchat, an offline messaging app built to relay encrypted messages and bitcoin transactions over Bluetooth mesh networks.
Authorities said Bitchat’s decentralized, registration-free design makes it harder to conduct lawful interception and investigation, even as protesters in Delhi use mesh tools during repeated internet shutdowns.
The order was issued late Thursday by the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre, part of the Home Ministry, under Section 79(3)(b) of the IT Act, and it named three GitHub repositories tied to the app with a three-hour deadline to disable access.
Bitchat was released by Jack Dorsey in July 2025 as open-source software and is designed to pass messages, including offline bitcoin transaction relays, phone to phone until a device with connectivity reaches the network, so payments can keep working during blackouts or shutdowns.
