Japan plans new defense ministry bureau to coordinate with allies

The unit is expected to manage transfers of defense equipment to partners and negotiate cooperation agreements between Japan’s Self-Defence Forces and foreign militaries.

Japan is planning to set up a new bureau inside its defense ministry to coordinate international defense cooperation with like minded countries, as Tokyo seeks to deepen deterrence against China, according to the SCMP Economy.

The government cited an increasingly challenging security environment and pointed to military threats from North Korea, Russia and China as reasons for the urgency to strengthen cooperation with countries in Southeast Asia and Europe.

The planned bureau is expected to oversee international coordination work, including handling the transfer of defense equipment to partner countries and negotiating agreements between Japan’s Self-Defence Forces and foreign militaries.
