U.S. energy use totaled 96 quadrillion Btu in 2025

The U.S. used 96 quads in 2025, up 2% from 2024 but below the 2007 peak of 99 quads, according to EIA data.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration says total energy consumption in the United States reached 96 quadrillion British thermal units in 2025.

That level was 2% higher than in 2024, but it remained below the record 99 quads logged in 2007.

EIA notes that petroleum was the most-used energy source last year, following a long shift from wood use in the 18th and 19th centuries to today’s mix of renewable, hydrocarbon, and nuclear technologies.
