China completes first high-speed rail tunnel under the Yangtze River
The 11.9 km Caiyuanba tunnel in Chongqing is part of a larger rail network that was 84.0% complete by March, according to state media.
China completed its first high-speed railway tunnel under the Yangtze River, a milestone aimed at improving links between the country’s inland regions and the coast. The project, finished on Friday, is the Caiyuanba Yangtze River Railway Tunnel in Chongqing.
The tunnel runs 11.9 km and connects two Chongqing districts, feeding into a broader high-speed line planned to link the southwestern megacity with Xiamen in Fujian province, according to SCMP Economy. The work required tunneling beneath mountains, residential areas, and riverbeds, with the contractor China Railway 14th Bureau Group using a custom boring machine designed to handle high water pressure and varying rock layers.
SCMP Economy said the wider rail grid covers eight north-south and eight east-west routes, reaching as far as Gansu province, and the cities of Hong Kong and Shenzhen, as well as Harbin in the northeast. By March, construction on the network was reportedly 84.0% complete, citing state-owned China Railway Group.
