Dollar steadies higher as Brent tops $100 and jobless claims beat forecasts
Initial Jobless Claims fell to 187,000 versus an expected 212,000, adding to safe-haven demand as Brent rose 6.5% above $100.
The U.S. dollar firmed as traders weighed a surge in oil alongside a better-than-expected labor-market read, according to Yahoo Finance. The U.S. Dollar Index gained ground, reflecting higher demand for safe-haven assets.
Yahoo Finance said Initial Jobless Claims totaled 187,000 for the week, compared with the analyst forecast of 212,000. At the same time, Brent oil rose 6.5%, climbing above $100 as Houthis attacked vessels linked to Saudi Arabia, supporting risk-off positioning.
The report tied currency moves to those cross-currents, noting EUR/USD slipped as traders reacted to the ECB decision to leave rates unchanged at 2.4%. It also referenced ECB President Christine Lagarde comments that the central bank was prepared to raise rates in September due to high oil prices, with EUR/USD trying to hold below support at 1.1350 to 1.1365.
For GBP/USD, Yahoo Finance reported downward pressure linked to the potential impact of higher oil, with risk-asset demand easing. The outlet also said USD/CAD was mostly flat amid commodity-market shifts, while noting Canada retail sales rose 0.4% month over month in June, matching analyst expectations.
