Hong Kong requires fire escape hoods for hotels and guest houses

Hong Kong home affairs officials said they are introducing a grace period and plan to discuss implementation details with the hotel and guest house sector after some groups said they were not consulted.

Hong Kong has mandated that hotels and guest houses install fire escape hoods as a fire-safety measure, according to SCMP Economy. The requirement comes as the city’s Home Affairs minister said the policy aims to protect tourists and improve safety at premises.

SCMP Economy reports that Secretary for Home and Youth Affairs Alice Mak Mei-kuen said the government is rolling out a grace period for the sector. She added that authorities will discuss implementation arrangements with industry stakeholders soon, following feedback that some representatives were not consulted when the requirement was introduced.

The outlet also noted that Mak’s comments followed an online post by Edward Leung Hei, chairman of the Hong Kong Feast and Retreat Association, who shared a Home Affairs Department letter.
