Southern China halts trains and evacuates residents as Typhoon Noul nears
An orange typhoon alert was issued as authorities warned of wind speeds up to 151 km/h and ordered boats docked and large gatherings cancelled.
Southern China suspended rail service and halted schools as Typhoon Noul moved toward the coast, with authorities evacuating residents in affected areas, according to SCMP Economy. The National Meteorological Centre issued an orange typhoon alert, its second-highest level in a four-tier system, on Saturday morning.
The storm was moving northwest across the South China Sea at about 20 km/h (12 mph) and was expected to make landfall overnight somewhere between Hong Kong and Huilai county in eastern Guangdong, the outlet reported. Strong winds and heavy rain were forecast for parts of Guangdong, Fujian and Taiwan, with the meteorological centre warning residents to stay indoors as much as possible and telling boats to be docked.
Rail operators began cancelling services in Guangdong, and all trains were set to be halted by Sunday, the article said. In Hong Kong, the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge remained open to traffic on Saturday morning, but tours of the structure were halted for two days.
