China’s top tech firms rebuff US congressional AI trip after 7 years

The US-China Economic and Security Review Commission delegation visited Beijing, Hangzhou, and Shanghai earlier this month to inform its annual report to Congress.

China’s biggest technology companies declined to engage with a US congressional delegation during a recent visit, denying commissioners a direct view into one of the world’s fastest-moving artificial intelligence ecosystems, according to SCMP Economy.

Analysts said the “snub” reflects Beijing’s increasingly selective approach to AI diplomacy, even as Washington and Beijing continue to pursue dialogue on AI safety.

The bipartisan US-China Economic and Security Review Commission delegation traveled to Beijing, Hangzhou, and Shanghai earlier this month for the first visit of its kind in seven years. The fact-finding mission was intended to help shape the commission’s annual report to Congress analyzing China’s military, economic, and technological developments.

During the trip, commissioners met with Chinese government officials, think tankers, diplomats, and business representatives to discuss artificial intelligence, advanced technology, biotechnology, economic security, and regional issues, SCMP Economy reported.
