Chinese team develops tantalum alloy that stays strong at 2,400°C
The alloy is designed to keep load-bearing strength up to 2,400 degrees Celsius, a level where many common high-temperature metals lose performance around 2,000 degrees.
A team of Chinese scientists says it has developed a tantalum-based alloy that retains strength at ultra-high temperatures, addressing a key materials challenge for extreme-heat engineering.
According to work published in Nature and described by SCMP Economy, the research team led by Sun Jun at Xian Jiaotong University reports exceptional load-bearing performance at temperatures up to 2,400 degrees Celsius, well above a roughly 2,000-degree threshold where most metals either melt or soften.
The story notes that the alloy is aimed at applications such as aerospace components, hypersonic vehicles, and nuclear reactors, where materials must endure both extreme heat and heavy loads.
It adds that while many metals see rapid structural changes once they reach about 60 percent of their melting point, nickel-based single-crystal superalloys used in aircraft engines cannot cross the 2,000-degree threshold, and tantalum melts at nearly 3,000 degrees Celsius.
