India youth protest over exam leaks shakes support for Modi government
The protests followed medical school entrance paper leaks that led to a resit for 2 million students and were linked to at least 12 suicides.
According to SCMP Economy, India is reeling after a youth-led protest that toppled an education minister and raised fresh questions about how well Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party is connecting with younger voters.
The outlet said thousands of young people joined the Cockroach Janta Party’s march to parliament, demanding examination reforms and the resignation of education chief Dharmendra Pradhan, with medical school entrance paper leaks serving as the catalyst.
SCMP Economy reported that the leak forced a resit, affecting 2 million students, and that the scandal drove at least 12 students to suicide. The protests were also portrayed as part of broader discontent tied to job prospects and corruption.
Analysts cited by SCMP Economy said the size of youth participation points to weakening faith in Modi, with the political test expected next year in key state elections.
