Southeast Asia needs further reforms to fully benefit from the “China plus one” manufacturing strategy, according to SCMP Economy.

The outlet notes that, as global manufacturers seek to reduce reliance on China amid rising costs, trade tensions, and supply chain vulnerabilities, Indonesia, Thailand, and Malaysia have been seen as natural alternatives.

SCMP Economy argues that the strategy offered a straightforward pathway for new factories and investment, but that governments now must address the underlying reforms needed to move from opportunity to sustained growth.
