Typhoon Noul cancels travel across Guangdong after landfall
The storm brought winds up to 162 km/h and is expected to move into Hunan by early Monday, weakening as it goes.
Typhoon Noul made landfall in Guangdong province early Sunday and triggered widespread travel cancellations, with high-speed rail services and flights suspended across the region, according to SCMP Economy.
The National Meteorological Centre issued its first red typhoon warning of the year on Saturday evening, the highest level in a four-tier system, before downgrading it to orange and then yellow as the storm weakened.
Noul hit Huizhou at around 3.50am, bringing heavy rainfall across southern China and winds of up to 162 km/h, slightly higher than Typhoon Bavi which struck the country’s east and northeast two weeks earlier.
The storm is projected to move northwest across central Guangdong before heading north into Hunan by early Monday morning, further weakening along its path.
