Typhoon Noul strands about 2,000 passengers overnight at Hong Kong airport
The Airport Authority said Sunday will see 675 flights planned, with 350 cancelled, and most services set to resume Sunday afternoon.
About 2,000 passengers were stranded overnight at Hong Kong International Airport after Typhoon Noul battered the city, according to SCMP Economy. Some travelers faced disrupted journeys while others complained that hotel room rates rose from HK$2,000 (US$255) to HK$3,000 per night.
The report said nearly all chairs in the departure hall were occupied by Sunday morning, with passengers also sleeping on benches or sitting on luggage trolleys and checking flight updates on their phones.
SCMP Economy reported that Airport Authority director of service delivery Yeung Tat-wing said the airport expects to handle 675 flights on Sunday, with 350 cancelled. Yeung said most flights are expected to resume Sunday afternoon and that all three runways could operate overnight if necessary.
The outlet added that Airport Express services resumed at 9am on Sunday, and Yeung said the airport aimed to return to normal operations by Monday morning.
