China plans major data center builds to support next AI workloads
Local officials in Guangdong announced a 100 billion yuan, 9,000-acre data and computing park, targeting completion by 2030.
China is accelerating construction of data and computing centers to back AI development, a buildout that is also expanding in the United States but with different local pressures, according to SCMP Economy.
In southern Guangdong, municipal authorities in Shatian, a small coastal town in Dongguan city, said they will invest 100 billion yuan, about US$14.7 billion, to build a 9,000-acre data and computing park on a barren island, with completion scheduled by 2030.
In eastern Zhejiang province, the county of Jiashan bordering Shanghai has opened a first phase of a 5 billion yuan data center with capacity of 15,000 petaflops per second, and plans to double total capacity when fully completed.
SCMP Economy reports the facilities are intended for training next-generation AI models as well as molecular and drug development, with local reporting saying the data center could process information faster than traditional supercomputers in the US.
