HKU president Xiang Zhang to step down in 2028 after second term

The University of Hong Kong said its president would hand over leadership at the end of a second five-year term in 2028, citing the need for fresh ideas as AI reshapes higher education.

The University of Hong Kong’s president and vice-chancellor Xiang Zhang said he will step down in 2028 after completing a second five-year term, according to an email seen by the South China Morning Post. The outlet said Zhang communicated the decision to the university community in the early hours of Monday.

In the email, Zhang reflected on the past eight years of work to improve the university’s academic standing, calling it a defining honour. He also pointed to a “complicated, rapidly changing world” shaped by polarised views and conflicts, and said HKU will have to respond to challenges brought by artificial intelligence.

Zhang said it was time for HKU to embrace fresh ideas and for a new leader to guide a transformation. He added that he remains a scientist and professor and wants to return to his laboratory to answer scientific questions and make a societal impact.
