Hybrid and plug-in market share rises in U.S. as EV share lags
In 2Q26, 24% of new light-duty vehicle sales were hybrids, plug-ins, or battery EVs, versus 22% a year earlier.
The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) said that in the second quarter of 2026, 24% of new light-duty vehicles sold in the United States were hybrid electric, plug-in hybrid electric, or battery electric vehicles, up from 22% in 2Q25.
The EIA reported that hybrid electric vehicles continued to gain share over the year, reaching a record 16% of light-duty vehicle sales in 2Q26.
According to the EIA, the mix shifted after the tax credit expiration, with battery electric and plug-in hybrid vehicle market shares lower than hybrids over the same 2Q25 to 2Q26 period.
