TotalEnergies to appeal Paris court ruling tied to climate goals
The Paris Judicial Court order, issued under France’s duty of vigilance law, required TotalEnergies to align its business with climate targets after finding it responsible for climate change.
TotalEnergies said it will appeal a landmark decision by the Paris Judicial Court, which ordered the French supermajor to align its business with climate change goals after holding it responsible for climate change, according to OilPrice.
In its Monday statement, the company said it plans to advance its arguments before the Paris Court of Appeal and frame its challenge around how the ruling was made under France’s duty of vigilance law.
The case comes as other European energy majors continue to face similar litigation. OilPrice notes that Shell has been fighting climate-related lawsuits in Dutch courts for years.
OilPrice also cited that in 2024 a Dutch court of appeal overturned an earlier ruling against Shell in a case brought by Milieudefensie, other NGOs, and private individuals, reversing an obligation for the company to cut greenhouse gas emissions.
