China reports a rise in Covid-19 positives, with NB.1.8.1 spreading
For the week of July 13 to 19, China’s Covid-19 test positivity rate rose to 16.3%, up 4.3 points from the prior week, while influenza fell to 12.6%.
China has seen a recent spike in Covid-19 cases, according to data cited from the Chinese Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, with Covid-19 overtaking influenza as the top respiratory pathogen for the first time this year.
The CDC said the Omicron NB.1.8.1 variant is spreading at a “moderate transmission level.” It noted that while authorities do not publish a weekly total of new infections, test data for the week of July 13 to 19 showed a Covid-19 positivity rate of 16.3%, up 4.3 percentage points from the previous week.
The same CDC dataset showed influenza positivity at 12.6%, down 0.9 percentage points over the prior week. The positive rate refers to the share of all diagnostic tests in hospital clinics that return positive for a given pathogen.
The CDC also said last month mainland China recorded 79,000 new confirmed Covid-19 cases, including 130 severe cases and one death. It advised elderly people and those with underlying health conditions to take preventive steps, including wearing masks in public places and hospitals, the outlet said.
