FCC bans imports of advanced robotic devices and connected power inverters
The FCC said the move targets risks that networked robotic systems could be used to manipulate data and physical operations, but it does not affect equipment already bought.
The Trump administration announced an import ban on new advanced robotic devices and connected power inverters, citing national security concerns and supply chain vulnerabilities, according to SCMP Economy.
The FCC expanded its Covered List to add two categories of foreign-made equipment, including mobile robots such as humanoids and quadrupeds, and connected power inverters.
The action would prohibit the import and sale of newly brought-in robotic devices and power inverters, while leaving previously purchased devices unaffected.
In its notice, the FCC said the networked capabilities of advanced robotic systems create vulnerabilities that could be exploited through attacks that manipulate both the data and the physical operation of the systems.
