GSK to move over 1,000 scientists to new Cambridge R&D centre
GSK’s Cambridge centre is a £400 million project, and the company says it targets at least 20 medicines in late-stage trials this year after buying Nuvalent.
GSK plans to relocate more than 1,000 scientists to its new Cambridge research and development centre, a move tied to a £400 million investment in the UK.
The company also plans to close its historic Stevenage facility and transfer most of the scientists to the Fens, while positioning Cambridge as a life sciences cluster alongside the area’s university, research institutions and healthcare assets, in line with its R&D acceleration focus.
GSK’s latest update came alongside shareholder positive signals, including a target to put at least 20 potential medicines into late-stage trials this year, up from 10 previously. The company attributed part of the increase to its near-£8 billion acquisition of US cancer specialist Nuvalent.
The report also points to management changes, noting that CEO Luke Miels, who took the role at the start of the year, has emphasized prioritizing which drug programmes receive stronger backing and which ones are cut, framing the pipeline push as a test of that approach.
