Hong Kong floods drive traffic disruptions as amber rain warning eases
The Observatory lifted the Tuesday amber rainstorm warning after warning that more than 30mm could fall in an hour, prompting advice to avoid watercourses due to flash-flood risk.
Hong Kong saw flooding in parts of the New Territories, with drivers struggling to navigate waterlogged roads in areas including Tai Po and Sha Tin even after the Observatory cancelled an amber rainstorm warning on Tuesday morning, according to SCMP Economy.
The amber warning had been issued at 7:15am and signaled that more than 30mm of rain had fallen in an hour, or was expected to fall generally over Hong Kong within that period, with continued risk of heavy rain and flooding.
The weather forecaster also warned of flooding in low-lying and poorly drained areas and advised people who are likely to be affected to take precautions, including staying away from watercourses due to the possibility of flash floods.
In the morning, buses, minibuses, and private cars were seen traveling through muddy waters that reached about halfway up their wheels, while the forecaster said showers would be heavier in some areas on Wednesday and conditions would remain unsettled for the following days.
