Hong Kong helps launch trials for breast cancer and eye treatment
The clinical studies will test US-developed therapies for metastatic breast cancer and macular degeneration across the Greater Bay Area, leveraging its roughly 80 million population beyond Hong Kong’s 7.5 million.
Two US-developed medical treatments, one for metastatic breast cancer and another for macular degeneration, are set to move into large-scale clinical trials in the Greater Bay Area, under a collaboration that involves Hong Kong and Shenzhen, according to the SCMP Economy.
Health Hope Pharma founder Dr Dennis Lam Shun-chiu signed a memorandum of understanding on Tuesday with the Greater Bay Area International Clinical Trial Institute and its Shenzhen counterpart, Greater Bay Area International Clinical Trials Centre, formalising the trial plan.
Lam, an ophthalmologist and former lawmaker, said the approach is intended to let his company draw on the Greater Bay Area’s patient pool to conduct drug development that he described as capital intensive and high risk, with the region’s common law system and capital flows aligning with international standards.
The Greater Bay Area comprises nine mainland cities in Guangdong province plus Hong Kong and Macau, and Lam argued Hong Kong alone, with a population of 7.5 million, would not be able to move quickly enough compared with the broader 80 million population area.
