Iran accelerates upgrades at Kharg Island oil terminal amid U.S. threats

Kharg Island handles about 90% of Iranian oil exports, and Iran said the work is focused on safety, fire detection, and improving equipment reliability.

Iran is speeding up development and infrastructure projects at Kharg Island, its main oil export terminal, as U.S. threats tied to negotiations continue, according to OilPrice citing bne IntelliNews and Iran's Shana News Agency.

The reported upgrades are aimed at enhancing safety, improving fire detection, increasing equipment reliability, and strengthening operational readiness to support the sustainable continuity of Iranian oil exports, Shana quoted IOTC head Abbas Assadrouz as saying.

Kharg Island is described as Iran's key conduit for crude exports, with its operations carried out with efforts such as dark mode to avoid detection, alongside the reinstatement of a U.S. blockade east of the Strait of Hormuz when hostilities returned.

OilPrice also notes that despite signals of de-escalation in the U.S.-Iran flare-up, U.S. President Donald Trump shared AI-generated images on Truth Social on Monday including one depicting a strike on Kharg, and the article says as many as 21 dark tankers were reportedly around the island.
