Malaysia raids Forest City scam centres, arrests 335
Police seized assets and equipment worth about 1.0 million ringgit and said the online fraud used investment and love scams targeting victims abroad.
Malaysian police raided 32 premises in Forest City, Johor, an area they described as a hub for online fraud call centres, and arrested 335 people, according to the state police chief cited by SCMP Economy and Reuters.
The operation on July 15 followed the identification of two targeted areas, and officers said the 335 suspects ranged in age from 20 to 58 and included 309 Chinese nationals, 19 Indonesians, three Malaysians, and four Myanmar citizens.
Police also seized equipment and devices worth about 1.0 million ringgit used in the scam activities, which the police chief said were carried out through investment and love scams targeting victims from abroad, particularly from China and Indonesia.
Forest City is described as a US$100 billion development on reclaimed land backed by Country Garden Holdings and a private Malaysian company linked to Malaysia’s King Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar.
