Moonshot AI releases Kimi K3 open-weight model, sparking US debate

Moonshot AI says Kimi K3 is an open-weight model with 2.8 trillion parameters, and it released supporting infrastructure such as efficiency and stability tools.

Moonshot AI has made its latest artificial intelligence model, Kimi K3, available for public download, prompting fresh debate in Silicon Valley over how Chinese open-source AI should be handled in the United States. According to SCMP Economy, the company released the model’s “weights,” the underlying parameters that encode its intelligence, along with tools intended to improve efficiency and stability.

SCMP Economy reports the release enables developers around the world to use, copy, modify, and distribute the software, describing Kimi K3 as the largest open-weight AI model so far with 2.8 trillion parameters. The outlet also links the attention to Moonshot’s open-source strategy and its push for support beyond Nvidia ecosystems.

The report adds that Alibaba Cloud said its supernode powered by proprietary Zhenwu M890 chips is compatible with Kimi K3, while a computing platform powered by Huawei Technologies’ Ascend 910C also completed adaptation. Alibaba owns the South China Morning Post, the outlet said.
