Shenzhen Natural History Museum opens July 28 after 3.5 billion yuan build
The project spans a 42,000-square-metre site and includes a 1,100-seat nature theatre, with permanent and temporary galleries.
SCMP Economy reports that the Shenzhen Natural History Museum is set to open to the public on July 28, positioning it as the first dedicated large-scale natural history institution of its kind in southern China.
The museum is spearheaded by the Shenzhen government with total investment of 3.5 billion yuan, excluding the cost of collecting artefacts, according to the outlet. The facility is located in the Pingshan district in northeast Shenzhen and sits on a 42,000-square-metre site, with 105,300 square metres of total floor area.
The building was designed by a consortium selected through a competition that drew more than 70 proposals, with Danish firm 3XN, Canada-based B+H Architects, and Chinese practice Zhubo Design involved. The design takes inspiration from a river delta, featuring a curvilinear structure, a walkable green rooftop park, permanent and temporary exhibition galleries, research laboratories, a 1,100-seat nature theatre, and three cinemas, SCMP Economy said.
