Tata Power eyes 2032 start for India’s first private nuclear plant

Tata Power expects construction could begin in early 2028, as India seeks to expand nuclear capacity to 100 GW by 2047.

Tata Power, one of India’s largest integrated power utilities, aims to have its first private nuclear power plant ready in 2032-2033, CEO Praveer Sinha said in an interview with Bloomberg Television.

Sinha said construction activity could begin in early 2028, reflecting India’s move to open the civil nuclear sector to private companies for the first time.

Tata Power has already shortlisted potential nuclear plant sites across at least three Indian states, according to Sinha.

India’s nuclear buildout target is to raise installed nuclear capacity to 100 gigawatts by 2047, up from 8.8 GW now, a ramp-up that would require cumulative capital of up to 19.28 trillion Indian rupees, or about $201 billion, based on a power ministry roadmap.
