Zapper to shut down after nearly seven years as DeFi exits mount

The closures come as trackers show 101 crypto projects labeled “dead” this year through July 26, with DeFi making up more than half.

Cointelegraph reports that DeFi dashboard Zapper will shut down this month after nearly seven years, adding to a wave of decentralized finance platforms winding down in 2026.

The outlet says other projects have already closed or are in the process of shutting down this year, including Bitcoin DeFi platform Botanix, the Solana portfolio tracker Step Finance, DeFi analytics platform Parsec, and DEX aggregator Odos Protocol, after multiple crypto market cycles.

Cointelegraph reports that Botanix’s founders attributed their platform’s end to weak demand and said activity has been concentrating on a smaller set of venues, including Hyperliquid and large centralized exchanges.

The article also cites RootData tracking 101 “dead” crypto projects in total for 2026 as of July 26, and it argues the trend is not industry consolidation, with Artemis data showing DeFi protocol concentration drifting lower since 2024 while onchain activity appears to be spreading across more parts of the crypto economy rather than shrinking to a few winners.
