Berkley Risk names Christopher L. Moede as unit president

The appointment takes effect immediately as W.R. Berkley reported record Q2 2026 gross premiums of $4.1 billion and a 20.5% operating return on equity.

W.R. Berkley Corporation has appointed Christopher L. Moede president of Berkley Risk, its third-party administrator and alternative risk program management business, effective immediately.

Moede succeeds John M. Goodwin, who joined Berkley Risk in 2012, was named president in 2014, and after more than a decade leading the unit has been appointed chairman.

Berkley Risk provides program management for workers' compensation, liability, and property claims nationwide for public entity pools, professional associations, and self-insured groups. The company said growth in captive and self-funded programs has accelerated as nuclear verdicts and social inflation increase commercial insurance costs, according to industry analysts.

The Moede appointment comes amid other subsidiary leadership changes announced by W.R. Berkley, including new appointments at Berkley Re America and Berkley Specialty London. W.R. Berkley also posted record gross premiums written of $4.1 billion in Q2 2026, with operating return on equity of 20.5%, while insurance segment net premiums written rose 3.7%, and AM Best upgraded the company’s long-term issuer credit rating to 'a' in 2026.
