Hong Kong research grants approve record HK$478 million for AI and more
One of the projects aims to cut AI data centre power use by up to 20.0%, while the AoE scheme funding rose to HK$158.0 million.
Hong Kong’s main public research funding body for universities has approved a record 12 university projects worth about HK$478 million in its latest financing round, with artificial intelligence appearing in more than a third of the successful proposals, according to SCMP Economy.
SCMP Economy said the Research Grants Council approved the funding under two flagship schemes, with the Areas of Excellence scheme receiving HK$158 million, up nearly 10.0% from last year’s HK$144 million, to support four projects covering areas including medical imaging and smart manufacturing.
Under the Theme-based Research Scheme, HK$320 million was allocated for eight initiatives focused largely on healthcare, green technology and AI. The council also highlighted a project targeting AI data centre power use reduction of up to 20.0%.
The council added that it will introduce “Low-altitude, Aerospace and Space Technology” as a new challenge topic under the TRS from the 2027-28 round, with the funding exercise beginning in mid-July, SCMP Economy reported.
