Hong Kong residents question tree damage after Typhoon Noul

Government hotlines received 331 reports of fallen trees as Typhoon Noul triggered No 8 and No 9 signals over two days.

The uprooting of numerous trees across Hong Kong during Typhoon Noul last weekend has raised safety concerns among residents, according to SCMP Economy, with an expert saying some planting approaches may have left trees unable to withstand strong winds.

SCMP Economy reports that two government hotlines received a total of 331 reports of fallen trees as Typhoon Noul triggered No 8 and No 9 signals on Saturday and Sunday. Of the fallen trees, eight were banyans at Wan Tau Tong Estate, and another of the same species was reported near Tai Po Mega Mall in Tai Po.

At Wan Tau Tong Estate, residents said the loss of trees that had stood there for more than three decades has left them upset and worried about local safety, SCMP Economy said.

SCMP Economy also quoted Leung Po-chu, 65, who has lived at Wan Loi House since 1991, saying she had watched the trees grow and questioned how a typhoon could bring down so many at once, noting the trees were part of her daily route to a shopping centre.
