Hong Kong to run drills for revamped Huanggang Port border crossing

Hong Kong’s Security Bureau is set to conduct a stress test and a large-scale incident and counterterrorism drill as early as August 21 ahead of the September launch.

Hong Kong is preparing to launch in September its revamped Huanggang Port border crossing, with drills due to begin next month under a new “joint inspection” model, the South China Morning Post reports. The outlet says officials plan to inspect the checkpoint on Friday, when Hong Kong will begin exercising jurisdiction over its designated area of the crossing.

Under the revamped setup, the outlet reports that exercises will test operations beyond internal checks done for prior checkpoint openings. It adds that officers from relevant departments are expected to move into the building from Friday to complete preparatory work.

The change is tied to legislation passed earlier this month, which provided the legal basis for a “co-location” arrangement with Shenzhen authorities in the same building. The bill cleared all stages in three days after being gazetted, according to the report.

Hong Kong has also mobilised departments to run a stress test and a large-scale incident and counterterrorism drill, with the test scheduled as early as August 21, the outlet reports.
