Lineage faces $500 daily fine over spoiled food, pests after LA warehouse fire
Los Angeles County Department of Public Health is fining the operator $500 per day until unsanitary conditions around the Boyle Heights site are resolved, as regulators cite pests and odor concerns.
A burned cold storage warehouse in Boyle Heights that caught fire in June is again drawing complaints from residents about rotting food odors and pests, prompting renewed government action, according to Bisnow.
The 500,000-square-foot facility at 1400 S. Los Palos St. is operated by Michigan-based Lineage Logistics. After the June fire, emergency officials cited toxic emissions tied to refrigerants vaporizing, and residents later reported the smell thickened, with large flies and rats moving into the neighborhood.
Local air regulators have received nearly 1,000 complaints about the odor, the Los Angeles Times reported, and the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health said it cited Lineage over unsanitary and nuisance conditions. NBC4 reported the agency is fining the company $500 per day until the conditions are resolved.
Residents have also asked for a mandatory evacuation. Bisnow reports that Supervisor Hilda Solis said only the city can declare an evacuation because the warehouse is within city limits, and Mayor Karen Bass said Lineage must remove all spoiled food from the facility by August 14, with the city prepared to use legal tools if the company misses the deadline. Lineage said on its website that as of July 25, all food in the burned part of the facility had been moved off-site, with crews power-washing and odor-control measures in place, including spraying waste with odor neutralizer multiple times a day.
