Senate confirms Jay Clayton as DNI, ending Bill Pulte’s acting role
Clayton was confirmed 51-47 on a party-line vote, replacing Bill Pulte at the DNI post after Pulte temporarily led the agency while overseeing FHFA.
The U.S. Senate confirmed longtime Trump ally Jay Clayton as director of national intelligence in a 51-47 party-line vote, ending Federal Housing Finance Agency Director Bill Pulte’s brief stint as acting DNI chief, HousingWire reported.
The outlet said Pulte took over the intelligence role in early June while simultaneously overseeing the FHFA, the regulator and conservator for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
HousingWire reported that during his time as acting DNI chief, Pulte claimed he carried out major staff reductions at the intelligence office, saying he executed “5th and Near Final Round of TERMINATIONS” that totaled a 30% staff reduction, though current and former officials told The New York Times it was unclear how many cuts actually occurred.
HousingWire added that some Democrats privately welcomed Pulte’s exit from DNI even as they opposed Clayton, and cited Sen. Mark Warner saying Clayton has “serious reservations” but that Warner hopes he provides “steadier leadership” than the intelligence community had recently.
