Senator backs proposed Clarity Act changes sent to the White House

The proposed revisions focus on limiting prosecutions for some crypto software developers and firms tied to platforms where others allegedly commit illicit activity.

Lawmakers are continuing to push forward on the Clarity Act, a U.S. bill intended to set out crypto regulation, after Democratic Senator Catherine Cortez Masto backed a new package of proposed changes that was sent to the White House, according to coverage cited by Bitcoin Magazine. Bitcoin Magazine reports that Masto, along with the National Association of Assistant U.S. Attorneys and the National District Attorneys Association, expressed optimism about the revisions. The proposed updates are aimed at a small section of the bill that seeks to protect certain crypto software developers and firms from being prosecuted for illicit activity committed by others on the platforms they create, the report says. The update comes as a new version of the Clarity Act circulated among lawmakers, including changes related to ethics and restrictions on officials and their families from issuing or promoting crypto. Bitcoin Magazine also notes that the bill passed the House last year but has been deadlocked in 2026 while regulators and banking leaders negotiate a revised version. Still, the report says sticking points remain, including concerns raised by the banking lobby about stablecoins and the yield they might offer to customers, and worries from some Democrats that the bill does not fully address ethical issues. Bitcoin Magazine also points out that revisions have been worked on by both Republicans and Democrats, with crypto legislation supported by pro-crypto political efforts, while lawmakers aim to move the bill before Congress leaves for the August recess.
