Tiptree to buy Universal Shield Insurance Group for $100 million

The specialty insurer acquisition includes 100% of USIG, with Tiptree also adding capital to support growth.

Tiptree has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Universal Shield Insurance Group, a specialty property and casualty insurer that operates in both admitted and excess and surplus markets.

Tiptree will pay $100 million to acquire 100% of USIG, and the deal is paired with additional capital aimed at helping the business grow.

In announcing the transaction, Tiptree said the acquisition would give it a foundation in specialty insurance and a path to scalable growth, citing USIG’s underwriting and risk management track record.

The companies also said Fortegra will operate from Box 388 on the third gallery in the Lloyd’s underwriting room, and that Tiptree and Warburg remain committed to supporting Fortegra as it executes its growth strategy.
