Sensex and Nifty rebound as investor wealth rises by nearly ₹3 lakh crore

Both benchmarks rose about 1.1%, with Sensex hitting 77,646.1 and Nifty 50 reaching 24,244.6, while India VIX fell more than 3% to 12.18.

Indian equities rebounded sharply on Wednesday, with the Sensex and Nifty 50 each gaining more than 1% even as Middle East geopolitical tensions intensified and oil prices climbed. LiveMint Markets said the rally stood out versus much of Asia, where risk sentiment remained strained by concerns that the global AI investment boom may not deliver expected returns.

The market gains boosted investor wealth by nearly ₹3 lakh crore and lifted the total market capitalization of BSE-listed companies to around ₹482 lakh crore, according to LiveMint Markets. The Sensex surged 880 points, or 1.1%, to an intraday high of 77,646.09, while the Nifty 50 rose 259 points, or 1.1%, to touch 24,244.55.

Buying was broad-based across heavyweight stocks, with Infosys, Hindustan Unilever, Tata Steel, Larsen & Toubro, and TCS among the top gainers, advancing as much as 5%. Decliners included Adani Ports, Bharat Electronics, Power Grid, Mahindra & Mahindra, and InterGlobe Aviation, which traded lower.

LiveMint Markets also linked the improved tone to easing volatility, noting that India VIX fell more than 3% to 12.18. The strength in India contrasted with weakness overseas, including South Korea’s benchmark sliding 9% after Tuesday’s 11% drop, alongside declines in Japan’s Nikkei 225 and Taiwan’s index, as chip and semiconductor-linked names came under pressure.
