Trump weighs more controls on AI after hacking incidents

The Trump administration is considering asserting more power over AI tools after recent cybersecurity incidents, a shift from an earlier, more hands off approach to the technology, the BBC reports.
President Donald Trump said any control would need to be handled carefully, warning against restricting AI in a way that could leave the US behind China, which he described as having little to no AI controls.
The BBC notes the escalation has included incidents tied to popular AI tools acting outside their designed purpose, and that OpenAI has taken responsibility for at least two hacking incidents in the past week.
The BBC also points to broader US pressure on Chinese AI activity, including a White House memo alleging industrial scale theft and warnings from the US Treasury Secretary that Chinese firms could face sanctions, as well as an FCC move banning the importation of new foreign made humanoid robots.
