Singapore takes possession of Lee Kuan Yew’s Oxley Road home
The acquisition means the site cannot be redeveloped for residential, commercial, or other private uses while authorities study how it could become a public space.
Singapore has taken possession of 38 Oxley Road, the former home of Lee Kuan Yew, and said it will study how to develop the property into a public space, ending a long-running dispute over its future, according to the SCMP Economy. In the interim, the site will receive necessary maintenance work as required, with no public access, while Singapore’s Land Authority and National Heritage Board oversee the process through a joint statement. The possession comes after Lee Hsien Yang reiterated his view that his father wanted the home to be demolished. The agencies previously said that the property was gazetted for acquisition in January and that the acquisition would account for the market value as of that gazette date, along with any claims by involved parties.
In addition, authorities said preserving and acquiring the property means it cannot be redeveloped for residential, commercial, or other private uses.
