Sony makes non-binding proposal to acquire Tamron

Tamron has set up a review committee for the proposal, while Sony would take the company private as a wholly owned subsidiary under a series of transactions.

Tamron, the Japanese camera lens maker, said it has received an acquisition proposal from Sony Group and formed a committee to review its options.

According to Reuters, Sony’s proposal is non-binding and would involve a series of transactions that could result in Tamron becoming a wholly owned subsidiary, though Tamron did not disclose financial details.

Tamron shares were halted during the session with a heavy volume of buy orders on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, and the company had a market capitalization of $1.18 billion as of Wednesday’s close.

Reuters also noted that Sony already owns 14.7% of Tamron, with Effissimo Capital holding 17.4%. Tamron reported operating profit fell 13% to 16.7 billion yen, to $102.15 million, in the year ended December 2025.
